Etre « auxiliaire de vie » : petit boulot ou véritable métier ?
De plus en plus de personnes sont dépendantes
Le métier d’une auxiliaire de vie (on parle aussi d’aide à domicile, d’assistante de vie , de garde-malade ) est d’aider les personnes dépendantes – âgées ou handicapées – à vivre à leur domicile. Celles-ci peuvent être très âgées, ou en sortie d’hôpital, ou victimes de maladies et de handicaps qu’on ne sait pas soigner : Alzheimer, Parkinson, maladies génétiques (myopathie, sclérose en plaque , …), accidents vasculaires cérébraux, accidents de la vie. L’allongement de l’espérance de vie rend plus fréquentes les situations de dépendance.
Les personnes dépendantes se trouvent – à des degrés divers selon l’importance de leur dépendance ou de leur handicap – dans l’incapacité de réaliser seules les actes élémentaires de la vie courante : se lever, s’habiller, aller aux toilettes, se laver, se nourrir. Parfois elles ne peuvent pas communiquer par la voix, et ne le font que par signes (de la main, de la tête, voire de simples battements d’une paupière). Dans leur très large majorité, elles souhaitent pouvoir continuer à vivre à leur domicile malgré les difficultés.
Une profession peu connue
Être auxiliaire de vie est une profession peu connue, surtout féminine – mais des hommes aussi exercent ce métier –, qui tient une place grandissante dans les activités de service. Selon l’étude toute récente de l’Institut Rexecode , les auxiliaires de vie ont réalisé 382 millions d’heures d’aide aux personnes dépendantes en 2007, soit l’équivalent de 230.000 emplois à temps plein [1].
Le travail de l’auxiliaire de vie est d’un intérêt général évident, mais il est loin d’être perçu comme attractif. De nombreux salariés français refusent les contraintes des emplois d’aide à domicile, ou ne les acceptent que « faute de mieux » et pour ce qu’ils considèrent comme une période transitoire de leur vie. L’auxiliaire de vie doit accepter une forte intimité avec la personne aidée. Les situations de travail sont vécues comme peu nobles (aider une personne incontinente), ou stressantes (soutenir des personnes déprimées, parfois désespérées). Les exigences du métier peuvent rebuter les candidats à l’emploi : les temps de travail sont souvent fragmentés, avec des période d’inactivité non rémunérées dans la journée. Il faut aussi accepter de travailler parfois la nuit, les dimanches, les jours de fête. Bien souvent à la fin du mois, le nombre d’heures travaillées et payées est inférieur à un temps plein, ce qui ne permet pas d’atteindre un niveau de salaire suffisant. La précarité est renforcée par la situation de santé de la personne aidée – une hospitalisation interrompt l’emploi. Certaines auxiliaires de vie interviennent auprès de malades en fin de vie, et sont amenées à vivre le décès de la personne dépendante : au choc psychologique de la mort s’ajoute la perte d’emploi.
Choisir le métier de l’aide à la personne est presque toujours dicté au départ par une situation de difficulté d’emploi : insuffisance des offres dans le bassin d’emploi (zones rurales notamment), absence de qualification, immigré légal dont la qualification n’est pas reconnue en France, immigré sans papier travaillant « au noir ». C’est aussi le moyen choisi par de jeunes immigrants pour financer leurs études, ce que permet la souplesse des horaires de travail. Le premier emploi sera à temps partiel pour quelques heures rémunérées au Smic. A mesure que l’employé à domicile acquière de l’expérience, il pourra prendre plus de responsabilités, commencer à jouer un vrai rôle de garde-malade et améliorer son salaire.
Différence et reconnaissance
Dans les grandes villes, particulièrement en région parisienne, on estime que plus de 80% des emplois d’auxiliaires de vie sont occupés par des personnes issues de l’immigration. Un phénomène récent est l’arrivée sur le marché de l’emploi du maintien à domicile d’immigrantes en provenance des pays de l’est qui ont rejoint l’Union Européenne. Beaucoup de personnes dépendantes, bénéficiaires de l’aide des auxiliaires de vie, n’ont jamais eu dans toute leur vie l’occasion de rencontrer des personnes originaires d’Afrique sub-saharienne, très nombreuses à exercer ce métier. Les stéréotypes raciaux doivent être surmontés lors du premier contact avec le bénéficiaire et sa famille. Mais ensuite ceux-ci reconnaissent volontiers le bienfait apporté par le « savoir-être » particulier des auxiliaires de vie de culture africaine. En effet la tradition africaine enseigne aux enfants « la piété, la probité, la bonté envers les pauvres et les infirmes et le respect envers les personnes âgées [2] ». Les bénéficiaires et leur entourage sont souvent impressionnés par les qualités d’écoute et d’attention des auxiliaires de vie, les témoignages de reconnaissance sont fréquents.
La professionnalisation
Depuis l’adoption du plan Borloo pour les services à la personne [3], une prise de conscience est intervenue sur l’utilité sociale des emplois d’auxiliaires de vie et sur la nécessité d’intégrer ces salariés dans un dispositif structuré et professionnalisant. Des entreprises nouvelles offrent aux auxiliaires de vie un cadre d’emploi pour en diminuer la précarité, rapprocher les horaires effectués d’un temps plein, offrir de meilleurs salaires, professionnaliser le métier (formations diplômantes, formation continue, validation des acquis de l’expérience). Une nouvelle convention collective est en négociation entre les partenaires sociaux.
Aujourd’hui, plus personne ne se risque à associer le terme « petit boulot » à celui d’auxiliaire de vie. Il s’agit d’un véritable métier, qui nécessite des compétences particulières et qui sera de mieux en mieux reconnu dans le futur de par le vieillissement inéluctable de notre société.
